The initial plan was to give two or three weeks notice prior to resigning and then be off on my merry way.
But that’s not how it happened.
When I got into work this morning, one of my coworkers had given her notice for the beginning of December. By mid-afternoon, there were discussions of job postings and some office restructuring. I had planned to wait until December 19 to resign, but I didn’t want to cause any problems with the hiring process if our boss would rather go in a different direction with both of us leaving.
Because of this, I gave a vague notice today. I went into his office and simply said that in light of these events, I wanted to let him know that I would be moving at the beginning of January and that I would give the standard two weeks as that date drew nearer. He was ok with it.
It sounds really simple and straight forward, but this was huge for me. I’m terrified of my boss. I’ve been terrified of most of my bosses. I have a tremendous fear of authority. Despite this, I still went into his office and did it. I’m super proud of myself. And everyone in my office is really excited for my new adventure.
