Over the past couple of months, my YouTube channel has grown exponentially with now nearly 1500 people subscribed to it. It started quite suddenly and I’m so grateful for the friendships I’ve made. A lot of people ask me why I started it, what I hope to gain from it. Some accuse me of trying to earn money by tricking Indians into watching it.
I started this channel as a way to share travelling tips. If you look at the couple of really early videos still present, they are about how to save money on flights and travel. I had travelled quite a bit up to that point and wanted to share what I had learned to help others. I had also planned to use any ad revenue (I didn’t realize back then that it would be almost nothing lol) to help fund my adventures. I didn’t have internet connection where I stayed in India for 3 months and I quickly lost interest so the channel died a bit.
When I decided to actually move to India, I started up again. I wanted to share my experiences with my family and friends to show them how great India is and also to alleviate any concerns or worry that they may have about my well being. Things didn’t go quite as planned which many of you know about and when I came back I wasn’t in the mood to do anything related to India. I wanted a step back.
I did make a couple of simple videos like why I came back and quick address of what I loved and hated about India. Suddenly in September these videos exploded and one day I had over 20,000 views in that 24 hour span. After that, I thought about revisiting everything. Afterall.. my experiences could be helpful for someone else thinking about travelling to India. I know what to bring, what not to bring, how to avoid getting sick, which places are best, and some other video topics that I’ve made along the way.
I don’t do this at all for money. I rarely earn more than $1 per day and this is in no way a career prospect. I do it to share my knowledge, to make friends, and to continue learning. All of these experiences of mine can’t be for nothing and I just want to put them to good use and help others either make the most of their trip, learn from my mistakes, or help to break down some negative stereotypes about Americans and other foreigners.
I often get emails from other foreigners asking specific travel advice or emails from Indians asking for me to help them improve their English or if they have a doubt/confusion about America. I love doing this and I’m so glad that I’m able to help you all.
Feel free to email me anytime at SamanthaJoGoes@gmail.com I may not reply immediately, but I will get back to you. Thank you for watching, reading, and going along this journey with me 🙂
